Why buy carbon offsets from CarbonTree Conservation Fund?

Not all carbon offsets are equal

In a market with mostly voluntary regulations, it is very important to recognize that not all offsets are equal.

A cost effective way to slow global warming

Eliminating deforestation is the most cost effective way to slow greenhouse gas emissions. Consider the following statistics.

To offset 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions you could...note 1

  • Protect four acres of tropical rainforest from deforestation.
  • Move 145 drivers from large SUVs to hybrids for one year.
  • Run one 600 kW wind turbine for an average year.
  • Replace 500 100-watt light bulbs with 18-watt compact fluorescent lights (10-year life).
  • Replace 2,000 refrigerators with the highest efficiency model (10-year life).
  • Install 125 home solar panels (20-year life).
  • Plant an acre of Douglas fir trees (50 years of growth).

Thus saving tropical rainforest is an extremely efficient way to keep carbon out of the atmosphere.

Our carbon offsets are clear and effective

CarbonTree Conservation Fund was created in an effort to provide clearly effective carbon offsets that also directly benefit biodiversity conservation and the environment. The directors at CarbonTree were frustrated with the unclear and often ineffective offsets sold by many companies. You have the right to know where your money went and what impact you made with your donation. Upon completion of an offset project, we provide you with details of how your donation was spent, including the location of the parcel of land that you helped protect.

Our carbon offset projects provide additionality

A high quality offset project provides "additionality" - a clear indication that the money invested in the project creates new greenhouse gas emission savings that would not happen without the project. All of our projects work to protect forests that without our intervention would be cleared for cattle pasture, agriculture, or development, thus assuring additionality.

We rise to a high standard

All of our projects will follow practices set forth in the Voluntary Carbon Standard for reducing carbon emissions by forest conservation.note 2
